WHAT IS TYPE 1 DIABETES?
YOU CAN'T CAUSE IT, CATCH IT or CURE IT.
Type 1 Diabetes is an auto-immune disease that is random, rapid and relentless. It is NOT caused by eating too much sugar, not exercising enough or being overweight.
Diabetes Canada reports that Type 1 Diabetes is a disease in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin.
Insulin is an important hormone that helps your body to control the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood.
Roughly 10% of people living with diabetes have Type 1. Children and adults, alike, can be diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at any time in life. Make no mistake, T1D is not 'what your grandma had'.
People with Type 1 can live a long, happy, adventurous life, but they need to inject insulin or use an insulin pump every day to ensure their bodies have the right amount of insulin to process the foods they eat and manage their blood sugars to stay alive. There is currently no cure for T1D.
Aside from the physical effects of living with high and low blood sugars, kids with T1D can often face tough social and emotional experiences such as loneliness, isolation, denial, fear, anger and damaged self-esteem. Diabetes Distress and burnout are real challenges that can bring about problems in other areas of their lives that manifest not only in their physical health but in their relationships with their families, peers, and health care professionals and their overall psychosocial well-being. We understand the weight of managing chronic disease. Let us help you share the burden.
